I’m guessing that in general you agree, right? Tax the rich.
If you agree, and you are in California, then please vote YES on Prop 40, the Billionaire Tax.
But the billionaires don’t agree. And they are the ones with the resources to get their messages across. They use their “free speech” (in fact it’s expensive speech) to convince voters that — although “of course we should tax the rich so they pay their fair share” — for one reason or another, “this just isn’t the right way to do it!”
Here’s a link that addresses some of their propaganda against the Billionaire Tax. No article can address all the contra arguments. New propaganda pieces come out every day. You need to identify those as they come in. Also, we can’t even know the behind-the-scenes machinations used in gathering the endorsements to amplify the billionaires’ messages. Expensive speech? Yup. Just today I got two costly mailers (1) urging opposition to Prop 40, the Billionaire Tax and (2) urging approval of a cleverly disguised “don’t tax the rich” proposition. Both Prop 41 and Prop 42 deserve big NO votes, since they were put up specifically to oppose the Billionaire Tax, and make taxes even less fair altogether.
How did they get their anti-tax propositions on the ballot? They even tried to recruit me! Earlier this year, I received multiple mailers asking me to collect signatures for these propositions. They were obviously anti-tax-the-rich because, in addition to the expense of the multiple mailers, I could recognize their doublespeak language about “improving transparency, effectiveness, and efficiency in California.” They also invoked “accountability”, a fine word that people gravitate toward. Sounds like Elon Musk’s DOGE, Department of Government Efficiency, with its cutting of public services and environmental protections.
